Signs of insulin resistance include excess abdominal fat (measured by waist circumference), high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, high fasting blood sugar, skin discoloration (commonly on back of neck, elbows, knees, knuckles, or armpits) and increased body fat.

How Can Insulin Resistance Be Prevented or Reversed?

Initial insulin resistance testing by healthcare providers is typically done by testing glucose levels in your bloodstream. The most common tests are a standard fasting blood glucose test and an A1c blood test which measures the average amount of glucose in your blood over a period of three months.

A1c tests which indicate levels between 5.7% and 6.4% suggests prediabetes while levels above 6.5% is considered to be diabetes.

In order to prevent or reverse diabetes you should focus on losing weight, exercising regularly and sleeping a proper amount in order to improve insulin sensitivity. It's important to focus on the big picture, simply exercising or dieting by itself is typically not enough to effectively combat insulin resistance.
